Mainly needed on phone. Why only when Shift held down, and not just whenever Shift is activated? (And I don’t mean during CAPS lock, which is NOT Shift lock.)
An error occurred while saving the comment F Hiew supported this idea ·An error occurred while saving the comment F Hiew commentedActually having it forward delete when Shift (but not Caps Lock) is activated is probably a great idea!
I think the reason why I suggested holding down Shift was that often one needs to forwards-delete several characters, and I may have been thinking it's easier to hold it down than alternating between Shift and Delete five times to delete five characters. But go for it. Either just pressing Shift or holding it down could enable Forward-delete.

Hi, putting this idea on the forum so we can find out how many people prefer the backspace in one place or the other.
Currently it is in the top row. GOOD because it’s like other (non-phone) keyboards and allows the punctuation keys to be in their normal places. BAD because it makes backspace harder to hit and the keyboard is harder to get used to from other phone keyboards.
We could move it to the bottom row. GOOD because it’s like phone keyboards that people are used to, and allows the backspace to be easily hit. BAD because it’s different from standard keyboards and would move the punctuation keys to a strange, hard-to-hit place.
If opinions are split we might consider making it an option, but options make the keyboard more complicated to configure (and many users never open Settings) and to maintain.
An error occurred while saving the comment F Hiew commentedWhile I prefer it at the top (I would much rather have the period/full stop in the usual place than a backspace key matching the Apple layout), I understand why having an option in the settings to swap Backspace with the Period/decimal point (.) key in the settings would be appreciated by some people. I assume a lower Backspace would be narrow like the current Period/Full Stop key: otherwise the coding would become extremely complex!
I also appreciate that having the option to swap them will make the coding difficult for all languages every time changes are implemented (e.g. short and tall layouts). The location at the top doesn't take long to get used to.

We are still considering this. For Typefinity 2.0 we almost removed the two punctuation keys on the right of rows 2 and 3 (and did remove one on row 1) which would have given extra width to the letters (without actually removing umlauted keys), however we were a bit hesitant to "rock the boat", as the keyboard is widely used in Germany. Instead we may add a second German layout with this removal.
An error occurred while saving the comment F Hiew commentedI assume some German users want the option of having the benefits of Padkeys (top row number keys; cursor arrow keys; comma and period keys available without shift, more spelling suggestions), but with the option of having the umlaut characters – which are available via Option or the pop-up key menus – not taking up space and compressing the other keys. I imagine this is more an issue on iPhone than iPad.

Update:
What about adding long-press of the ‘X’ causes the suggestion to be suppressed this time but not in the future? This is the opposite of the way Jon Lang suggests but users will be unlikely to discover long-press and their first priority is to “teach” the keyboard not to make substitutions that are not right for them. Aside from that, we don’t want to get into adding manual actions for controlling the dictionary because the goal is this kind of fiddling is kept out of the user’s hands. (Note, ‘ie’ → ‘i.e.’ and similar have been added as hard-coded shortcuts in English.
(Earlier comment):
The problem you mention is an annoying one. But I’m not sure about solving it by taking up a slot on the suggestions row for (typed) or “typed” every time there is an auto-suggestion. The constant presence of that item is one of the things…
An error occurred while saving the comment F Hiew commentedJon Lang has some great ideas. Putting an "+ADD" (or "Learn", "sic", "+" or "+1" etc) button which will add the typed word to the dictionary wouldn't take much space on the suggestion bar. Maybe you could remove the Redo arrow when it's not active?

We can consider this, however:
- It slows down the use case where you often switch to an emoji keyboard, or to Apple’s (to get dictation button).
- It operates differently from the Globe on the Apple keyboard, so many users may have a hard time finding it, and/or Apple itself might reject the app.I wonder if there would be any alternatives, maybe moving the Globe, or delaying the tap effect just enough on that key to avoid the accidental triggering during typing?
An error occurred while saving the comment F Hiew commentedExample of a PC keyboard's Caps Lock key with smaller raised section to reduce accidental presses.
An error occurred while saving the comment F Hiew commentedI would guess that when people hit the globe key by mistake, they are either trying to press Option or the Z key (in English) (or equivalent key in other languages).
I myself don't seem to find it a problem on my iPhone, though, but I understand that people with different sized fingers might.
If you examine the standard Apple iOS keyboard (at least, on an iPhone), they have made it slightly harder to hit by mistake. The bottom row of keys is very close to the bottom of the screen, and there is a tiny bit more distance between the rows. Also the "123" key is slightly wider, to make it easier to hit.
My advice would be:
- Narrow the space bar slightly, and move the Globe key a bit further from the Option key. Perhaps put it exactly where the iOS Globe key is (currently the Padkeys Globe is to the left, and higher up than the iOS Globe key) Perhaps make the Option key a little bit wider. But you don't want to move the Globe key very far away from where it is in the iOS one, as we need it to be in roughly the same place to swap between keyboards quickly. I have deleted good keyboards because their Globe key was in the bottom left hand corner.- Move the bottom row downwards a tiny bit, maybe 1-2mm on an iPhone
- Make the Globe key a tiny bit less tall than the surrounding keys (maybe by 1-2mm on an iPhone). (In a similar way to some PC keyboards, where the raised part of the CAPS LOCK key is less wide than the entire key, to prevent accidental presses).
- If doing the above makes the keyboard look strange, it may be possible to make the touch-sensitive area of the Globe key slightly smaller than the key, to make it more difficult to hit by accident.
Any news on this one?
